Description

What does normal washing powder contain?

5-15%: Oxygen-based bleaching agents, Anionic surfactants. Non-ionic surfactants, Polycarboxylates, Soap, Perfume, Phosphonates, Optical brighteners, Zeolites, water softener, alkaline pH modifiers, catalytic enzymes, colourants and fragrances. medium-strength STPP (sodium tripolyphosphate) potent components such as caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) or caustic potash (potassium hydroxide), acid slurry, soda ash, sodium tripolyphosphate, soap stone, sodium silicate, sodium sulphate, synthetic dye. Most laundry detergents are toxic. Popular detergent options contain over 25 toxic chemicals!

Surfactants can Damage Mucus Membranes and Lungs. Many laundry detergents use surfactants like petroleum distillate or naphtha. These surfactants can boost the cleaning power of laundry detergent. However, they also can damage mucus membranes and lungs, which could lead to serious respiratory problems.

Phosphates – linked to cardiovascular (heart) disease as well as osteoporosis. These toxins are particularly damaging to the marine environment when dispersed in wastewater from your wash.

Bleach – often used to brighten whites, its toxic fumes cause respiratory distress and on contact with skin and eyes it is able to cause caustic burns.

Formaldehyde – A chemical usually associated with preservation of dead bodies. This toxic ingredient is a class B1 probable carcinogen. This means it has been linked with an increased risk of cancer.

Ammonium Sulphate – harsh cleansing agent that is corrosive and toxic. They can cause eye, skin and lung damage even with minimal exposure.

Dioxane (1,4 Dioxane/ Diethylene Dioxide/ Diethylene Ether/ Dioxan) is quite possibly one of the worst additives. Dioxane is also a carcinogen and has been known to pose a combustion risk. Exposure to this toxin can damage your kidneys, lungs, central nervous system, eyes, skin and respiratory function.

Along with the toxins listed above there are also dyes, fragrances and brighteners that don’t really brighten fabric, they just hide stains under residue left on the clothing. Often there are trace elements of even worse chemicals left unlisted. It is a marvel that laundry detergent is permitted to be sold at all, given what toxins are in it. What seems a harmless box of suds on the laundry shelf is silently damaging both your health and the environment.

What does our Natural Laundry Powder Contain?

Well, for one, it’s got none of those nasty toxic chemicals. Just 5 natural, powerful and biodegradable ingredients – Epsom Salts, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium carbonate (washing soda with Ph of 11), Dead Sea Salt (softens the water) and Borax (deep cleaning properties).

And our essential oils options – the first 100 orders will receive a complementary small bottle of essential oil, no artificial fragrances allowed! Use your own favourite oils.

And because of those ingredients, our laundry detergent is safe for babies, safe for sensitive skin, and safe for septic systems. It’s also totally vegan, palm oil free, and cruelty free.

Our natural washing powder is ultra-powerful, so all you need is one tablespoon of powder per load for a regular washing machine, or just ½ a tablespoon per load if you have a high-efficiency washing machine.

So one packet is going to last you up to 22 loads of laundry for a regular washing machine! But test the quantities of powder and adjust for your liking/effectiveness. We can actually use half a tablespoon with effective results. This will give you over 40 washes per packet! Just sprinkle the powder directly into the drum, or add to detergent tray.

No need to use a softener with your washing either! For starters, a softener is riddled with harmful chemicals and an un-natural scent. This powder will keep your clothes soft by not leaving ‘conventional’ washing powder residue behind!

Hand-washing delicates. Got some sweaters or other delicates you can’t toss in your washing machine? Fill your sink or a bucket with warm water, and sprinkle in ½ or 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent and stir until it’s dissolved. Add your delicates and gently wash as you normally would by hand. Rinse clean with fresh water.

Stain releaser. Mix a small amount of our laundry detergent with a bit of water to create a watery paste. Apply the paste directly to stains and let it sit for 15-20 minutes, then add to your washer and wash as normal.

When chemical cleaners and detergents are put up against eco cleaners, the results are always better. This is because their constituent parts are sourced from plants, which are regarded as having greater quality than parts created by chemicals. When using a chemical-based detergent, even freshly laundered clothes could feel gummy. If natural detergents are used to wash garments, this is not the case. Less product is utilised when using organic detergents, which is an additional advantage.

Gentle by nature:
The whole day, your clothing is in touch with your skin. If you use strong cleaning solutions or ones with a lot of chemicals, you might leave residue on your clothes that you could come into contact with. Using a very powerful detergent might cause skin allergies. People with sensitive skin benefit greatly from the gentle and hypoallergenic nature of organic goods. Furthermore, they are free of toxins that might damage your family’s skin, such as phosphate and chlorine.

Ecologically Favourable
The design and manufacturing processes of organic items are environmentally benign and do not negatively impact the natural world. They are producing superior goods while ensuring that the manufacturing method has no adverse effects on the environment, which is the primary goal of organic businesses. Customers will be able to buy items that don’t hurt the atmosphere in this manner. Conventional detergents and cleansers will include toxic compounds, which endanger the environment and wildlife by leaching into water supplies.

While washing your clothing, many conventional laundry detergents emit hazardous chemicals into the air due to the synthetic scents they contain. These substances might contribute to indoor air’s poor quality, leading to respiratory illnesses and other health issues. The aroma of natural oils or perfumes included in eco-laundry detergents may improve the air quality in your house and leave your laundry smelling lovely.

Essentials Oils You Can Use in Your Laundry
The cleaning experts interviewed for this story recommend using these essential oils in your laundry:
Lavender: Calming, promotes relaxation and better sleep
Lemon: Refreshing and uplifting, can remove stains and brighten whites, antibacterial
Peppermint: Energizing
Tea Tree: Antifungal and antimicrobial
Eucalyptus: Invigorating and antimicrobial
Lemon or Orange : Uplifting and fresh

Why Use Essential Oils in Laundry?
Switching to essential oils for your laundry routine offers several benefits:
• Natural Fragrance: Escape the harsh chemicals of traditional laundry products by using natural oils like lavender, lemon, and eucalyptus to freshen your clothes.
• Eco-Friendly: Essential oils are biodegradable and environmentally friendly, reducing your ecological footprint.
• Gentler Alternative: Essential oils can offer a more natural alternative to synthetic fragrances and harsh chemicals found in traditional laundry products

Not only can essential oils give your clothes a nice and natural scent, but they also help fight bacteria, reduce odours and soften clothes naturally.

It’s important to remember that essential oils are concentrated, so you shouldn’t use too much at a time. We usually recommend using 2-10 drops of essential oil per wash, depending on your personal preference and the size of your wash. Some essential oils, such as tea tree oil and lavender oil, are also known for their cleansing properties, so they can be particularly effective for washing sportswear and bed linen.

Always remember to follow the washing instructions on your clothes and avoid using essential oils on delicate fabrics or clothes that require special care.

So if you want to add a natural and pleasant scent to your clothes, essential oils are a great choice. Try experimenting with different oils and combinations to find the best scent for your clothes. Coconut oil may cause an allergic skin reaction for some people.
Be sure to read the specific instructions on your essential oils before adding them to drying clothes and always choose high-quality oils for best results.

Natural Laundry Detergent vs Regular Detergent: Skin Sensitivity
It has generally been assumed that more chemicals in detergent will equal cleaner clothes, but this is a falsehood. A jug of regular detergent contains synthetic chemicals and petroleum by-products. Chemicals such as:

• Sodium Laureth Sulphates
• Phosphates Benzenes
• Synthetic fragrances
• Formaldehyde
• Chlorine

Not only are these dangerous and caustic chemicals on their own. But when they are used on items that are worn in close contact against the body for long periods of time, they can worsen existing skin problems.

Skin conditions like Eczema, Psoriasis, and Rosacea can become further irritated by these chemicals. This can lead to rashes, blistering, skin redness, and intense itching.

These chemicals can also seep into pores on the skin and are absorbed into the body. Over time, these chemicals could be linked to causing certain forms of cancer.

Natural laundry detergents are made from natural ingredients. They are safe for individuals with skin problems and sensitive skin, even infants. Isn’t gentleness on the skin an important deciding factor in choosing the best natural laundry detergent for your family?

Natural Laundry Detergent vs Regular Detergent: Eco-Friendliness
Environmentally-conscious individuals understand the negative effects common household products have on the environment. If regular detergents contain chemicals that can cause skin problems and cancers in humans, then just imagine the impact they can have on the environment.

With each load of clothes washed in regular detergent, that runoff has to go somewhere. After your washing machine finishes a washing cycle, the water drains out into waterways. The chemicals do not break down as easily, so they can pollute and cause harm to the ecosystem. These toxins poison fish and other wildlife that eat the fish or drink from the contaminated water source. Contaminated water can also leak into the ground. This can even affect the water table, meaning your drinking water could contain remnants of detergent chemicals. To ensure that the natural ecosystem stays healthy, choose natural detergents. They contain natural ingredients and are biodegradable. They break down naturally and are safer for the environment.

Natural Laundry Detergent vs Regular Detergent: Effectiveness
Again, most people believe that the added chemicals of regular detergent make it more effective at cleaning your clothes. But this also isn’t true when it comes to clothes washing. These harsh chemicals just mask the odours of your clothes and may not be as effective at really cleaning the stains out.

Natural detergents have all-natural ingredients that have been shown to clean your clothes better than those with chemicals. They use enzymes to break down dirt, grease, and grime much better than chemical-based detergents do.
These natural enzymes also require a much lower temperature in order to work. Whereas regular detergent has to have a higher temperature that can damage some clothing types. The enzymes lift the stains out naturally and carry them away in the rinse cycle.
Chemical-based detergents can leave your clothes feeling sticky with a residue. Using a natural detergent will actually have your clothes feeling lighter and fresher in comparison.

Natural Laundry Detergent vs Regular Detergent: Scent
Normally the way you tell if a piece of clothing is clean is by smelling it. If it has a strong perfumed scent from your detergent, then it is clean, right?
No. This is also a common misleading claim about regular detergent. Regular detergents are loaded up with heavy perfumes that equate a fresh flowery fragrance with cleanliness.

These scents can be overpowering and can trigger allergies in those with perfume sensitivities. Wearing clothing with strongly scented detergents can make you or others around you miserable.

Natural detergent has no scent at all naturally. Since it really gets your clothes clean, there’s no need to rely on perfumes to make the detergent appear fresher through smell. Although adding a few drops of essential oils can create a lovely natural scent if desired. Organic plant botanicals give clothes a lighter and more natural scent.

Natural Laundry Detergent vs Regular Detergent: Amount of Product Use
Pouring regular laundry detergent into the washing machine is often a guessing game. For larger laundry loads, most individuals believe that they need to pour a large amount of liquid detergent into the washing machine to compensate for it. This is also not the case.
More isn’t necessarily better when it comes to regular laundry detergent. You’re spending more money per load and wasting laundry detergent. Adding more regular detergent to the wash just increases its filmy texture build-up on your clothing with each wash.
Regular bargain detergents can also contain more water by volume. So you’re not actually getting more cleaning ingredients in larger laundry detergent jugs. Billions of plastic jugs of these detergent containers are produced each year and 70% are discarded in landfills.
Natural detergent has more concentrated cleaning power, so you can use less in each wash and still reap the benefits. You’re saving money in the long run by not using as much with each load too. Concentrated natural detergents dissolve quicker in the wash cycle without requiring excessive foaming action.

Natural Laundry Detergent vs Regular Detergent: Energy Efficiency
Natural laundry detergent also has many great benefits when it comes to energy efficiency as well. Using a natural laundry detergent is better for your washing machine. It can also help you save money.

It works at lower temperatures so you don’t waste energy heating the water for each cycle. In fact, higher temperatures can kill the natural enzymes before they’ve had a chance to work. It can make the plant-based detergent less effective. Wash at 30 degrees or lower.
Hot water also causes your clothing to shrink and fade. Delicate items are safer with the gentle and effective cleaning power of a natural detergent. You can keep your clothes looking better and feeling fresher longer.

Over time, regular detergents cause a build-up on your washing machine and cause an odour. This can transfer over to your clothes. Plant-based detergents can also naturally clean your washing machine!

Natural Laundry Detergent vs Regular Detergent: Sustainability
Regular detergents are chemically processed. They contain petrochemicals made from petroleum by-products. This is a form of crude oil, the same as the gasoline you use to fill up your car’s gas tank.

Petroleum products pump dozens of unhealthy chemical compounds into the air we breathe every day. Finding these resources also destroys the natural environments of humans and animals on the planet.
If the chemical output and destruction of natural environments aren’t bad enough, petroleum by-products are also in a dwindling supply.
Use caution though as not all green laundry products are what they say they are. Many brands can still contain petrochemicals despite carrying the “green” label.

Sustainability is a big factor in the benefits of natural laundry detergent vs regular laundry detergent. If you opt for plant-based laundry detergent, you are making a difference in the future. It may seem small now, but it can have a big impact later on.
